EV Charging Systems and 10-Amp Lighting Circuits
July 23, 2026 @ 8am CT

New EV Charging & Lighting Circuit Requirements
Advancement in technology always presents new challenges to home inspectors. Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly common, and understanding the power systems for EV charging in both commercial and residential settings requires additional training. New code changes now also allow 10-amp branch circuits for lighting, with changing conductor size requirements. Our EV Charging Systems and 10-Amp Lighting Circuits virtual class is specifically designed for home inspectors who need to properly inspect these newer systems and circuits.
What You Will Learn
In this 3-hour interactive class designed for home inspectors, you will:
- Understand EV Charging System Levels and Terminology
Gain a thorough understanding of Level 1, 2, and 3 EV charging supplies, including the different voltages, amperages, options, and common terms and definitions used in the field.
- Inspect Level 2 Charging Systems in Depth
Examine Level 2 charging systems in detail, covering receptacle types and ratings, load management options, adapters, different manufacturers’ configurations, GFCI requirements, and continuous load considerations.
- Evaluate 10-Amp Lighting Circuits and Conductor Requirements
Compare lighting loads between LED luminaires, incandescent, and fluorescent fixtures, and learn the permissible loads on 10-amp circuits, including new code allowances and how to identify compliant installations.
- Identify Copper-Clad Aluminum Conductors
Learn about copper-clad aluminum conductors, including cable types, manufacturers, ampacity ratings, permitted usage, and identification techniques to ensure accurate and safe inspection reporting.
- Apply Overcurrent Protection and GFCI Standards
Understand overcurrent protection, GFCI requirements, maximum loads, conductor ampacities, and receptacle ratings as they apply to EV charging and 10-amp lighting circuits.
- Recognize Potential Issues and Know Your Responsibilities
Review photo examples of different installations, learn what potential issues to look for, and clearly understand the inspector’s responsibilities and limitations when encountering these newer systems.
